Lionel Messi Contemplates the Future: The Final Chapters of a Storied Career

As Lionel Messi approaches his 37th birthday on June 24, the legendary Argentine forward is not only gearing up for another Copa América but also facing the inevitable twilight of his illustrious football career. In a candid conversation with ESPN, Messi opened up about the emotions and considerations surrounding his eventual retirement from the sport that has defined much of his life.

"Am I aware that there's not much left? Does it make me enjoy it more? I think the world isn't ready for me to stop playing football, are you?" These were the poignant questions posed by journalist Martín Arévalo, highlighting the global impact of Messi's potential retirement.

"And I think I'm not ready either. Football has been my life; I love playing, I enjoy the training sessions, the daily grind, the matches... And yes, there's always a bit of fear about it all coming to an end," Messi shared. His move from Europe was a significant change, facilitated by his World Cup victory which helped him view his career and its end differently. "But I don't think about it much; I try to enjoy it. That’s why I savor everything much more, knowing that there's less and less time left. I enjoy the little things which I know I'll miss once I'm no longer playing," he added.

When asked about his future club prospects beyond his current stint at Inter Miami, Messi was clear. "Is Inter Miami your last club?" he was asked. "Yes, I think so. Right now, that's my plan," Messi confirmed, indicating that he does not foresee a return to Newell's or Barcelona.

Since joining Inter Miami in July 2023, Messi has not only elevated the profile of the Major League Soccer (MLS) but also sparked significant interest across the United States. He signed a contract that extends until the end of 2025, with an option for 2026, which interestingly coincides with the World Cup scheduled in the US, Mexico, and Canada. His participation in that tournament, however, remains unconfirmed.

In a previous interview, Messi hinted at the factors that would influence his decision to compete in the World Cup. "What will determine my presence at the World Cup? How I feel, my physical condition, and being realistic with myself about whether I can compete and contribute to the team," Messi explained, acknowledging the realities of aging and the reduced intensity of his game schedule compared to his years in Europe.

Responding to recent comments by French star Kylian Mbappé that suggested the European Championship might be tougher than the World Cup, Messi offered a diplomatic yet assertive reply. "He also had made some comments about South American teams before the World Cup... Everyone values the competitions they play in. Of course, the Euro is very important, featuring some of the best, but that leaves out Argentina, a three-time world champion, Brazil, with five titles, and Uruguay, with two. There are many world champions not involved to say it's the toughest. In the World Cup, all the champions are generally there, and I think that’s why everyone wants to be a world champion," Messi concluded.

As the conversation about his retirement continues, Messi remains focused on enjoying his remaining time on the pitch, cherishing every moment, every game, and every opportunity to delight football fans around the world with his unparalleled skills.
