Preview and Prediction

Baltimore Orioles skipper Brandon Hyde would prefer to witness his team play with a bit more ease in the early stages of games.

The Orioles will have another chance to do so when they welcome the Toronto Blue Jays for the finale of their shortened two-game series on Sunday.

Following Friday's series opener being washed out, Baltimore made a comeback for a 5-4 victory on Saturday.

The Orioles had been shut out for 15 consecutive innings and were held hitless through 4 2/3 innings until Heston Kjerstad launched a two-run homer to spark the rally on Saturday.

Baltimore added three more runs in the sixth, all with two outs, thanks to a solo home run by Adley Rutschman and a two-run double by Cedric Mullins.

"The guys were really internal during the first four innings because everyone was just trying to get something going," Hyde commented on Saturday's game. "We need to improve on that. Similar situations occurred at times last season, where they were almost trying too hard, their at-bats were ending too early, or they were getting frustrated with hitting a hard ground ball right at someone."

Mullins solidified his position as Baltimore's most formidable hitter, improving to 7-for-12 with runners in scoring position this season.

"You want him up there in a big moment," Hyde said. "You know it's going to be a highly competitive at-bat. He's playing with no-nonsense right now, and he's just full of energy and playing extremely hard."

Left-hander Cade Povich is set to take the mound for the Orioles on Sunday.

Povich (0-1, 3.48 ERA) deserved a better outcome in his last start.

He surrendered four runs over six innings in a 4-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals on April 6, but only one run was earned. He didn't issue any walks and struck out four batters.

"It was huge for him to go six innings for us," Hyde said. "I thought he was really, really competitive. I thought they took some good swings off him, but being able to go six innings for us, that's huge."

Povich has made two starts against the Blue Jays in his career and has yet to earn a win, posting an 8.38 ERA. He has also walked nine batters in 9 2/3 innings against them.

Right-hander Jose Berrios is slated to take the mound for Toronto in the series finale.

Berrios (1-1, 4.58) allowed just one run and four hits over seven innings in his last outing, a 6-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Monday.

He faced Baltimore in the season opener on March 27 and didn't have as much success, giving up six runs and nine hits in five innings of a 12-2 loss.

Berrios boasts a 10-2 record against the Orioles in his career with a 3.31 ERA, including the only shutout of his career.

Berrios has been one of the most consistent starting pitchers in the league, making 32 starts in every full season since 2018.

Last season, he finished with a 3.60 ERA over 192 1/3 innings, further cementing his reputation as a model of consistency.

"There's no one else you can look at and say he does everything the right way like Berrios does," Toronto pitcher Chris Bassitt said.

"The way he takes care of himself should be studied around the league so everyone should do that. So, the so-called workhorse in Berrios and his constant readiness is what I find most admirable," Bassitt added.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Baltimore Orioles Recap APR 13TH 2025

Jeff Hoffman blanked the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth and 10th innings to help the visiting Toronto Blue Jays finish off their 7-6 comeback victory Sunday and earn a split of the rain-shortened two-game series.

Hoffman struck out back-to-back batters with the tying run on third base in the 10th inning to end the game. It marked the second time in five days that Hoffman (2-0) threw a scoreless ninth and 10th to earn a win.

In the top of the 10th, Myles Straw beat out a slow roller to third off Matt Bowman (0-1) with runners on the corners and one out to give the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead.

Ernie Clement went 4-for-5 and scored twice, Alejandro Kirk homered, doubled and drove in two runs and Andres Gimenez had two hits and scored two runs for the Blue Jays, who had lost two in a row.

Toronto starter Jose Berrios allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Ryan Mountcastle and Tyler O'Neill homered and Gunnar Henderson went 3-for-5 and scored two runs in the leadoff spot for the Orioles, who were trying to win two in a row for the first time this season.

Orioles starter Cade Povich allowed two runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked one on 76 pitches.

The Blue Jays trailed 6-3 heading into the eighth before Gimenez and Kirk started the inning with doubles to cut the deficit to 6-4. Davis Schneider drove in another run with a groundout to make it 6-5, and Bo Bichette came through with a two-out single to left to tie it 6-6.

Henderson scored on a two-out wild pitch in the first to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead.

Kirk lined a two-strike, two-out pitch over the fence in left field in the second to tie it 1-1.

Mountcastle answered with a two-out solo home run to left in the bottom half of the second to move the Orioles back in front. Schneider, Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. delivered three straight singles to start the third and tie it 2-2.

Baltimore again regained the lead quickly when Henderson tripled to center to lead off the third and then beat the throw home on a grounder to second.

O'Neill lined a solo homer to left leading off the fourth to stretch the lead to 4-2.

Clement doubled with two outs in the sixth and came home on Straw's single to right to cut it to 4-3.

Back-to-back errors in the sixth -- by Bichette at short and Guerrero at first -- allowed the Orioles to tack on two unearned runs for a 6-3 lead.
