Sergio Perez on rumors: I'll retire 'when I want'
Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez confesses that he briefly considered departing from Formula 1, but maintains that his retirement is still a minimum of two years away.
The 34-year-old Mexican racer's future has been a topic of speculation, with rumors circulating that Red Bull intended to replace him before his contract ends after the 2025 F1 season.
Perez revealed to DAZN that he did contemplate walking away during the past six months, but ultimately made the decision in just three seconds.
He stated, "In the end, it would have been the easy option to quit after so many years and give up. I would never have forgiven myself for that."
"My main focus is to reach a point where I can determine my own future," he added.
This season, Perez has yet to win a race on the F1 circuit. He has achieved 14 top-10 finishes, including three second-place finishes, and currently holds eighth place in the standings. His Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen leads the table as he pursues his fourth consecutive world championship.
Perez has six grand prix victories and 39 podium finishes in his career, but he desires more.
He stated, "For now, I am very motivated. I really want to continue in F1. I enjoy it, especially the good times. But you also learn to appreciate the bad ones."
Perez has no intention of racing into his 40s like 43-year-old Spaniard Fernando Alonso. He wants to spend more time with his young children as they grow up.
He stated, "I will be here for at least two more years. However, I don't see myself in Formula 1 for much longer."
