The Colorado Avalanche acquired experienced goalie Kaapo Kahkonen from the Winnipeg Jets on Friday.

The Jets, who signed him to a one-year, $1 million deal in the offseason, placed him on waivers on Thursday with the intention of sending him to the American Hockey League's Manitoba team. Winnipeg already has starting goalie Connor Hellebuyck and backup Eric Comrie on their roster.

The Avalanche began their season with an 8-4 defeat against the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday. Starter Alexandar Georgiev allowed five goals on 16 shots, and Justus Annunen stopped two of four shots.

Originally from Finland, Kahkonen has a career record of 49-67-15 in 139 games (131 starts) with a save percentage of .899, a GAA of 3.33, and four shutouts. He has played for the Minnesota Wild (2019-22), Sharks (2022-24), and Devils (2024). The Wild selected him in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Draft.
