Utah Hockey Team Introduces Additional Moniker Choice: Outlaws
The potential nickname for the Utah Hockey Club is being changed from Wasatch to Outlaws.
The team, which recently relocated from Arizona to Salt Lake City, is in search of a permanent name.
In-person fans at upcoming home games will be given three options to choose from: Utah Mammoth, Utah Wasatch, or the current Utah Hockey Club.
Wasatch is a nod to the Wasatch Mountains in the area. According to USA Today, the team stated that the name was meant to honor the concept of a mythical snow creature.
However, after the results of the voting at Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the club announced on X on Wednesday, "Hey Utah hockey fans! We heard your feedback and analyzed all the data from last night's survey. It's clear that Outlaws should be included instead of Wasatch, so we're making the switch."
Voting will continue at home games on Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday.
The original list of six potential names included Outlaws but not Wasatch. The front-runner prior to the poll was Yeti, but the hockey club was unable to obtain the necessary licensing approvals as a cooler company already uses that name.
Heading into their Friday game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Utah Hockey Club has a record of 21-21-8 and is currently in fifth place in the Central Division, seven points away from a playoff spot in the Western Conference.
