The Edmonton Oilers have appointed Stan Bowman as their general manager and executive vice president of hockey operations on Wednesday, almost three years after he stepped down from the Chicago Blackhawks amidst controversy.

Bowman, aged 51, served for 20 seasons (2000-21) in Chicago, with his final 12 years as GM, and secured three Stanley Cup victories (2010, 2013 and 2015).

However, Bowman resigned in October 2021 following an investigation into allegations of sexual assault made by former player Kyle Beach. He, along with other members of the team's management, were found to have inadequately addressed the accusations.

As a result, Bowman, former Blackhawks executive Al MacIsaac and former head coach Joel Quenneville were suspended by the NHL. They were reinstated on July 1, with the league stating that they had used their "time away from the game to engage in activities which not only demonstrate sincere remorse for what happened, but also evidence greater awareness of the responsibilities that all NHL personnel have, particularly personnel in positions of leadership."

Bowman now has a second chance with the Oilers, who narrowly missed out on winning the Stanley Cup last season, losing to the Florida Panthers in seven games.

He takes over from Ken Holland, whose five-year contract has expired and was not renewed.

Jeff Jackson, Edmonton's CEO of hockey operations, expressed his excitement and satisfaction with Bowman's appointment, stating, "I believe his extensive experience and proven success in this role, along with the important work he has done during his time away from the game, aligns with our goal of being the best in all aspects of our organization. Through our discussions, we share a common vision for our team and what it takes to win another Stanley Cup title."

Under Bowman's leadership, the Blackhawks achieved a record of 493-310-109, won three Western Conference titles, and secured the Presidents' Trophy in 2013.
