"Sharks Put First Draft Pick Macklin Celebrini on Injured Reserve List"

Injury Forces Sharks to Place Macklin Celebrini, Top Draft Pick, on Injured Reserve

San Jose Sharks newcomer forward Macklin Celebrini was put on the injured list on Saturday, just hours before the team's match against the Anaheim Ducks.

Celebrini was absent from Friday's practice due to a lower-body injury, following his remarkable NHL debut the day before. He scored a goal and assisted in the Sharks' 5-4 overtime defeat against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.

The goal was made 7:01 into the game, when he attempted to pass from the right circle to teammate William Eklund in the slot. The puck ricocheted off Blues defenseman Matt Kessel's leg and went past goaltender Joel Hofer.

It was the second-fastest goal for a No. 1 overall pick in their debut, only surpassed by Mario Lemieux's score 2:59 into his first game for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Celebrini, at 18 years and 119 days, is the sixth-youngest player to score in their NHL debut.

He also earned his first assist to Tyler Toffoli at the 17:14 mark of the first period.

Celebrini received numerous accolades during his one-year tenure at Boston University, where he aided the Terriers in reaching the NCAA Frozen Four.

The 18-year-old became the youngest recipient of the Hobey Baker Award - presented to the top college hockey player - after recording 64 points (32 goals, 32 assists) in 38 games last season.

On Saturday, the Sharks also called up defenseman Jack Thompson from the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League.

Thompson, 22, has yet to register a point in three career NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Sharks.
