The Tampa Bay Lightning's season opener set for Saturday against the Carolina Hurricanes was delayed on Thursday due to the aftermath of Hurricane Milton in the area.

A new date for the game has not yet been announced.

The Lightning were originally scheduled to kick off the new NHL season with a two-game series against Carolina, with the first game in Raleigh on Friday and the second in Tampa on Saturday.

In order to avoid the powerful Category 5 storm, the team left the area early and headed to Raleigh. Milton eventually made landfall in Florida as a Category 3 hurricane.

The Lightning have two home games on the schedule for next week: Tuesday against Vancouver and October 17th against Vegas.

Milton caused severe damage in the Tampa area, including ripping off the roof of Tropicana Field, home of the MLB's Tampa Bay Rays. This was the second hurricane to hit Florida's Gulf Coast in two weeks, following Hurricane Helene.
