The Toronto Maple Leafs inked unrestricted free agent Anthony Stolarz to a two-year, $5 million deal and also extended the contract of fellow goalie Matt Murray for one year at $875,000 on Tuesday.
Stolarz, who is 30 years old, played in 27 games (with 24 starts) for the Stanley Cup-winning Florida Panthers last season. He had a record of 16-7-2 and led the NHL with a 2.03 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage (with a minimum of 25 games).
As the backup to starter Sergei Bobrovsky, Stolarz appeared in one playoff game, making 16 saves on 19 shots in an 8-1 loss to the Edmonton Oilers in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final.
Throughout his NHL career, which has spanned 108 regular-season games, Stolarz has played for the Philadelphia Flyers (2016-19), Oilers (2019), Anaheim Ducks (2019-23), and Panthers (2023-24). In total, he has a record of 43-31-9 with a 2.69 GAA and a .915 save percentage.
Stolarz was selected by the Flyers in the second round (45th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.
\"If you look at his career, he has served as a backup to some top-tier goaltenders, so he hasn't had many opportunities to start,\" said Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving. \"He's a big, athletic goalie. As we all know, it takes time for goaltenders to develop their game, and I think he has done that.
\"He has been around an elite goalie in (Sergei) Bobrovsky. He has gained valuable experience, even though he hasn't been in the net, by being a part of a successful team last season. He is also technically sound.\"
Murray, who is also 30 years old, missed the entire 2021-22 season due to bilateral hip surgery in October. This was the final year of his four-year, $25 million contract that he signed with the Ottawa Senators in 2020.
Murray only played in 26 games for the Maple Leafs in the 2022-23 season, finishing with a record of 14-8-2, one shutout, a 3.01 GAA, and a .903 save percentage.
As a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Murray has a career record of 146-86-24 with a .910 save percentage, a 2.79 GAA, and 15 shutouts. He has also played for the Senators (2020-22) and Maple Leafs. In 51 playoff games (with 50 starts), he has a record of 29-21-0 with a .921 save percentage and a 2.18 GAA.
The Maple Leafs acquired Murray in July 2022 from the Senators.
