Kyle Okposo goes out a winner, announces retirement
Experienced forward Kyle Okposo concluded his career in a remarkable fashion, aiding the Florida Panthers in securing the Stanley Cup in June.
A mere three months later, Okposo declared his retirement from the NHL on Thursday after 17 successful seasons.
In an open letter distributed by his representation, CAA, the 36-year-old Okposo reflected on his time in the league.
\"Playing hockey for 30 years was an incredible journey,\" he wrote. \"It led me to incredible places and provided me with unique experiences. I have faith that the game is currently in a great state, but the possibilities are endless. I am eager to continue contributing to the game as it reaches new heights.\"
During his brief stint with the Panthers, Okposo failed to register any points in six regular-season games. He was acquired by Florida on March 8 from the Buffalo Sabres, where he recorded 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists) in 61 games.
Okposo contributed two assists in 17 playoff games, aiding the Panthers in securing their first-ever Stanley Cup.
In his 1,051 career games with the New York Islanders (2007-16), Sabres (2016-24), and Panthers, Okposo tallied a total of 614 points (242 goals, 372 assists). The Islanders drafted Okposo with the seventh overall pick in the 2006 NHL Draft.
