Anze Kopitar achieved a hat trick in the third period and the Los Angeles Kings came back from behind to win 3-1 against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night.

Trailing 1-0, the 37-year-old Kopitar scored just 13 seconds into the third period. Later, during the Kings' five-on-three power play, Kopitar scored from the low point with only 1:38 left in regulation. The veteran player then added an empty-netter with 42 seconds remaining, securing the Kings' victorious season opener.

Meanwhile, Darcy Kuemper made 32 saves for Los Angeles, despite being outshot 27-11 in the first two periods.

Alex Tuch scored a goal and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 20 shots for Buffalo, who suffered another loss after being defeated by the New Jersey Devils twice in Prague last week. The Sabres were unable to score on any of their five power play opportunities and have only scored three goals this season.

Utah 5, Islanders 4 (OT)

Dylan Guenther scored his second goal of the game at 2:18 of overtime, leading the Utah Hockey Club to a win over the Islanders in Elmont, N.Y. This was the season opener for New York.

Guenther received a pass from Sean Durzi in the slot and sent a shot past Islanders goalie Semyon Varlamov, who was screened by teammate Noah Dobson. This was Guenther's second consecutive two-goal game, helping the Utah team start their inaugural season with two wins.

Maxim Tsyplakov, who was signed from Russia's KHL in May, scored with 2:07 left in regulation, giving the Islanders a 4-3 lead and his first NHL goal.

Bruins 6, Canadiens 4

Boston turned the game around after being down 2-1, scoring four consecutive goals and ultimately defeating Montreal for their ninth consecutive home-opening victory.

Mark Kastelic scored his first two goals as a Bruin, including a crucial insurance goal with four minutes remaining that stopped a two-goal rally from Montreal. Jeremy Swayman made 21 saves in his first start since signing an eight-year, $66 million extension with the Bruins on Sunday.

Montreal's Brendan Gallagher scored twice and Cole Caufield also scored a goal. Cayden Primeau (23 saves) lost in his season debut.

Senators 3, Panthers 1

Linus Ullmark made 30 saves in his debut for Ottawa, Tim Stutzle scored twice, and the Senators defeated the Florida Panthers at home.

Shane Pinto also scored for the Senators. Ullmark, who was acquired in a trade with the Boston Bruins in June, made 16 saves in the third period.

Gustav Forsling scored for the Panthers, who started a four-game road trip. Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves for the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Penguins 6, Red Wings 3

Anthony Beauvillier scored two goals to help Pittsburgh defeat Detroit in their season opener, spoiling the Red Wings' home opener.

Marcus Pettersson and Erik Karlsson each had a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who were coming off a 6-0 loss to the New York Rangers in their season opener on Wednesday. Joel Blomqvist made 29 saves for the win.

Alex DeBrincat scored two goals and had an assist for Detroit. Ville Husso stopped 10 of 14 shots before being replaced by Cam Talbot, who made 12 saves and allowed two goals.

Maple Leafs 4, Devils 2

Dennis Hildeby made 22 saves in his NHL debut and Toronto scored three goals in the first period to defeat the New Jersey Devils in Newark, N.J.

The result spoiled the home debut of Devils coach Sheldon Keefe, who was the Maple Leafs' coach for the previous four-plus seasons.

Jesper Bratt scored a power-play goal and Timo Meier also scored for the Devils, who were denied their first 3-0-0 start since the 2018-19 season. The Devils had won their first two games in Prague against the Buffalo Sabres.
