Oilers' Evander Kane to have surgery, miss start of season
Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane will undergo an operation and will be out of action until the beginning of the regular season, according to general manager Stan Bowman's announcement on Wednesday.
\"He will be absent for an extended period of time,\" Bowman stated, without disclosing the specific details of the surgery. \"I don't want to speculate on that. Our medical team will be able to provide more information, but he will not be available for quite some time.
\"It will happen soon. He will not be able to participate in training camp or the start of the season. I don't want to comment on the medical aspect. We will have our doctors address that, but he will be undergoing surgery.\"
Kane, 33, tallied 44 points (24 goals, 20 assists) in 77 regular season games in 2023-24 and eight points (four goals, four assists) in 20 playoff games. He missed the last five games of the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers due to a sports hernia.
\"Our goal was to determine the best course of action for his injury,\" Bowman explained. \"Sometimes when players are injured -- he can probably speak to this better than I can -- there are multiple options for treatment. You receive a diagnosis and sometimes it can be rehab, other times surgery is necessary, and sometimes surgery is an option but you may want to try rehab first. Ultimately, nobody wants to have surgery. There can always be complications. Evander would probably be better suited to speak on that.\"
Kane has accumulated 617 points (326 goals, 291 assists) in 930 career games with the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise, Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks, and Oilers. He was selected fourth overall by the Thrashers in the 2009 NHL Draft.
