"Interference Results in 2-Game Suspension for Lightning's D Emil Lilleberg"
Tampa Bay Lightning defender Emil Lilleberg received a two-game suspension for interference against Detroit Red Wings forward J.T. Compher after a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Monday.
The incident took place during the second period of Saturday's game between the two teams, resulting in a two-minute minor penalty for Lilleberg at 11:21.
A few moments after Compher passed the puck to a teammate, Lilleberg delivered a late hit to Compher's head, causing an injury.
According to a Department of Player Safety official, the hit was deemed worthy of supplemental discipline due to its lateness and the significant head contact and force involved. This was explained in a video released by the department.
As a result of the suspension, Lilleberg will miss the Lightning's upcoming home games against the Chicago Blackhawks and the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. He will be eligible to return on Saturday for the game against the New York Islanders.
The 23-year-old Lilleberg has recorded 11 assists in 45 games this season and has a total of 16 assists in his 82-game career with the Lightning.
