"Injury Forces Capitals' Alex Ovechkin to IR with Lower Body Issue"
The Washington Capitals put their captain, Alex Ovechkin, on the injured reserve list on Wednesday as he recovers from a lower-leg injury.
Ovechkin, who is 39 years old, left Monday's game against the Utah Hockey Club in Salt Lake City with 14:30 remaining after colliding with Utah forward Jack McBain.
Before his injury, Ovechkin had scored two goals and has a total of 13 goals in his last 11 games. He currently has 868 career goals and needs 27 more to surpass Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 goals set between 1978 and 1999.
The Capitals announced on Tuesday that Ovechkin's recovery time is uncertain and will depend on further evaluations with team physicians in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
To fill Ovechkin's spot on the roster, the Capitals have recalled forward Ivan Miroshnichenko from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.
Miroshnichenko, who is 20 years old, has recorded 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 16 games with Hershey this season. He also had six points (two goals, four assists) in 21 games with Washington last season.
The Capitals selected Miroshnichenko with the 20th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.
