Ducks G John Gibson out 3-6 weeks after appendectomy
Anaheim Ducks netminder John Gibson underwent an urgent appendectomy on Wednesday evening and will be out of commission for three to six weeks, according to the team's announcement on Thursday.
Gibson, 31, has been a member of the Ducks since the 2013-14 season, when he was drafted in the second round of the 2011 NHL Draft. The three-time All-Star holds the record for most games played by a goalie (477) and saves (13,294) in Ducks history, and ranks second in wins (193) and third in shutouts (24).
During the previous season, he had a .888 save percentage and a 3.54 goals-against average, finishing with a record of 13-27-2. Throughout his career, he has a record of 193-206-61, with a .910 save percentage and a 2.90 GAA.
According to the team, Gibson has been one of only four goalies in the league to make over 5,000 saves (5,533) in the last four seasons, along with Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck (6,648), Nashville's Juuse Saros (6,529), and Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy (5,901). He also ranks 10th in starts (187) and 11th in appearances (190) during that time period, as reported by the Ducks.
In 2015-16, he was chosen for the NHL All-Rookie first team, and he and Frederik Andersen were awarded the William M. Jennings Trophy for allowing the fewest goals while playing a minimum of 25 games for the team. In 40 games (38 starts), Gibson had a record of 21-13-4, with a .920 save percentage, a 2.07 GAA, and 79 goals allowed.
He has led the league in losses three times (2019-20, 2020-21, 2022-23) and in overtime losses in 2021-22, as well as in goals allowed in 2022-23 (200).
Gibson did not participate in the Ducks' 4-3 preseason-opening victory over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday evening. The regular season begins on October 12th, with Anaheim facing off against San Jose.
