'Alex Ovechkin exits ice with a limp, forced to leave game due to leg injury'
In the midst of his most impressive run of the season, Alex Ovechkin's evening was cut short on Monday.
Now, the Washington Capitals and their leader will have to wait and see if he will miss more than just the end of a dominant victory.
After netting two goals in a 6-2 triumph over the Utah Hockey Club in Salt Lake City, Ovechkin collided with Utah forward Jack McBain while attempting to clear the puck out of the defensive zone with 14:30 remaining in the game.
Following an accidental entanglement of their legs, Ovechkin fell to the ice and took a moment to regain his footing. The 39-year-old veteran was assisted off the ice by teammate Jakob Chychrun and briefly sat on the bench before heading back to the locker room.
He did not return to the game.
According to Capitals coach Spencer Carbery, Ovechkin is still being evaluated after the game.
His two goals brought his career total to 868, placing him just 26 behind Wayne Gretzky's NHL record. They also propelled Ovechkin to the top of the league for this season with 15 goals. It took him only 18 games to reach 15, the fewest in his illustrious career.
The previous day, he scored a hat trick in a 5-2 victory against Vegas and has now scored 13 goals in his last 11 games.
Ovechkin also tied an NHL record on Tuesday by scoring against his 178th different goalie, Utah's Connor Ingram. He now shares this record with Jaromir Jagr. Additionally, Ovechkin recorded his 100th multi-goal game on the road, making him the first player to reach this milestone.
The Capitals, who have won four consecutive games, will face the Colorado Avalanche at home on Thursday.
