"Penalty Imposed on Avs Newcomer Matt Stienburg for Charging"

Colorado Avalanche newcomer Matt Stienburg will attend a player safety hearing on Thursday after his actions during Wednesday evening's defeat against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home.

The 24-year-old rookie was charged with charging Lightning defenseman Erik Cernak at 17:18 of the second period in the Avalanche's 5-2 loss. Stienburg was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct. Cernak was unable to continue playing.

Drafted in the third round in 2019, Stienburg made his NHL debut on October 16. In eight games, he has yet to score a point but has recorded 16 hits and 22 penalty minutes.

Originally from Nova Scotia, Stienburg played three seasons at Cornell University before joining the AHL's Colorado Eagles in 2023-24, where he contributed 13 points (five goals, eight assists) and 63 penalty minutes in 54 games.
