"TGL ratings remain unchanged despite highly anticipated Tiger-Rory match"
The TGL strategically arranged for Rory McIlroy's debut match to be against co-founder Tiger Woods. Despite the drama that unfolded during Monday night's showdown, it did not result in a significant increase in ratings for the new league.
ESPN had an average of 864,000 viewers for Woods' Jupiter Links Golf Club's overtime victory over McIlroy's team, Boston Common. While this was an improvement from last week's 682,000 viewers, it was lower than the 919,000 viewers for the league's debut match and the slightly over 1 million viewers for Woods' first match in Week 2.
After four weeks, the TGL has an average of 874,000 viewers, which is still much higher than the viewership for PGA Tour events this year. According to Front Office Sports, Monday night's match peaked at 1.1 million viewers during the first overtime.
Woods' first two matches have averaged 932,000 viewers, while the two matches without his team have averaged 800,500 viewers. However, this includes the league's debut match, where Woods and McIlroy were both present.
The regular season will continue for 15 weeks and will be followed by a two-show finale on March 24-25.
The TGL was co-founded by Woods and McIlroy, along with TV sports executive Mike McCarley. Monday night marked the first time the two superstars appeared together.
