Sergio Garcia renews his application for DP World Tour membership
Sergio Garcia has reapplied for entry into the DP World Tour in hopes of being eligible for the European Ryder Cup team next year.
The 44-year-old golfer left the European tour last year after accruing over $1 million in fines for joining LIV Golf in 2022. Despite considering paying off his debts to participate in last year's Ryder Cup, Garcia has now decided to serve his suspension and become eligible for next year's event.
According to a statement from a DP World Tour spokesperson, "Sergio Garcia submitted his application to return to membership of the DP World Tour for the 2025 season ahead of the deadline on Sunday, November 17."
Garcia holds the record for the most individual match wins (25) and points (28 1/2) in Ryder Cup history. He made his debut in the competition at the age of 19 in 1999 and has since participated in 10 Ryder Cups. Only Lee Westwood and Nick Faldo, with 11 appearances each, have played in more for Europe.
The 2025 Ryder Cup will take place from September 26-28 at Bethpage Black in New York, following Europe's victory at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome last year.
Despite finishing third in LIV Golf's individual points race last year, Garcia must be a member of the DP World Tour to be eligible to compete for Europe in the Ryder Cup.
European captain Luke Donald commented on Garcia's potential participation, saying, "He thinks he can play. He wants to play. I don't think he has talked to me about being an assistant captain, but again, he would have to re-join the tour for him to be eligible. He's certainly very interested in doing that. He understands everything that's involved and again, the decision has to go to him whether he's prepared to do all that."
Donald also mentioned that as long as players meet the regulations and rules set by the DP World Tour, they are eligible for selection. This includes several LIV Golf players who are now eligible to be chosen for the Ryder Cup team.
