"Rory McIlroy Believes Trump's Victory Paves the Path for LIV-PGA Tour Agreement"
Rory McIlroy stated that Donald Trump's comeback to the White House "opens the door" for a deal between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.
Trump recently mentioned on the "Let's Go!" podcast that he could potentially negotiate an agreement between the two sides in approximately "15 minutes."
"When asked about Trump's comments, McIlroy responded on Wednesday, "He may have the ability to do so." "He has Elon Musk, who I believe is the most intelligent man in the world, by his side. If we can get Musk involved, we may be able to make something happen."
McIlroy spoke at a press conference for the DP World Tour's Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.
"Yeah, I think from an outsider's perspective, it may seem less complex than it actually is. However, Trump has a strong relationship with Saudi Arabia. He is a big fan of golf. So, it's possible. Who knows?"
"But as the President of the United States, he probably has more important matters to focus on than golf."
McIlroy was also questioned about a report in the London-based tabloid The Sun, which claimed that he and Tiger Woods had helped negotiate a $1.3 billion deal between the rival golf leagues.
"It's the first I've heard of it," the Northern Irishman stated. "I know that (PGA Tour commissioner) Jay (Monahan) was in Saudi Arabia last week... and had some meetings. However, I believe I would have heard about it if there was something going on."
"I am aware that he will be briefing the transaction committee tonight. So, perhaps some news will come out of that. However, as far as I know, I haven't heard anything."
McIlroy, who is a member of the PGA Tour subcommittee currently negotiating with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, stated that the results of Tuesday's U.S. presidential election could accelerate a resolution.
"Obviously, with today's news about what's happening in America, I believe that clears the way a bit," he said. "So, we'll see."
McIlroy, 35, is currently ranked third in the world. He is comfortably leading the DP World Tour's Race to Dubai rankings with two tournaments remaining.
