Presidents Cup captain's assistants having fun, chasing 'pinnacle'
Geoff Ogilvy, the assistant to the international team captain, expressed that defeating the U.S. at the Presidents Cup would be the "ultimate achievement in the sport."
During a media session with all nine assistants at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, Canada, Ogilvy stated, "We do not hold animosity towards the opposing team. We simply want to win because they are the toughest team to beat in the world. It is the pinnacle of the sport to defeat the U.S. team in an event like this." He was joined by Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Camilo Villegas, and Shigeki Maruyama on captain Mike Weir's staff.
The 15th edition of the Presidents Cup will begin on Thursday with five fourball (better ball) matches.
The Americans have a record of 12-1-1 in the all-time series and have never lost on home soil. The International team's only victory was in 1998 at Royal Melbourne.
Els stated, "This time, I feel we have a new identity, and the team has fully embraced it. We are on a path to end our drought, hopefully this week."
Ogilvy acknowledged the challenge of defeating a U.S. team featuring World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and No. 2 Xander Schauffele.
He said, "If we can bring together a group of players from around the world and defeat them, I cannot imagine anything better. Our motivation to win comes from the respect we have for the other team, rather than any animosity."
U.S. captain's assistant Justin Leonard acknowledged the advantage of having history on their side but emphasized that they are not taking anything for granted.
Leonard stated, "Our ultimate goal is to get the players in the right mindset and understand their individual preferences in terms of receiving information."
He added, "This year, we have a different group of assistants and some new players as well. However, after speaking with past assistants and gathering their insights, we feel confident in our understanding of each player's needs."
In addition to Leonard, captain Jim Furyk's assistants are Brandt Snedeker, Stewart Cink, and Kevin Kisner.
Snedeker expressed his admiration for his fellow assistants, stating, "We have a fantastic group of guys. We are all great friends, and I have been pleasantly surprised by how close-knit this team is. As captains, our goal is to let the players play their best golf and have fun while doing so."
