San Francisco's Head Coach: Pro Bowl Offensive Tackle Trent Williams (ankle) Expected to Sit Out Remainder of the Year
Star left tackle Trent Williams, who has been absent from the last four San Francisco games due to an ankle ailment, is likely finished for the remainder of the season, according to 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan's statement on Wednesday.
\"If he manages to recover and become healthy, we would definitely put him back in the game,\" Shanahan explained. \"But unfortunately, that is not the case at the moment, so it seems like we are heading in that direction.\"
San Francisco (6-8) has three regular-season games left, including a match against Miami this Sunday, a home game against Detroit on December 30th, and an away game against Arizona on a date yet to be determined.
Williams, who is 36 years old, has not played since the team's 20-17 defeat against the Seattle Seahawks on November 17th. He has started in all ten games he has played this season and has been on the field for 98 percent (649) of the offensive snaps during those games.
Jaylon Moore has taken over Williams' position and is not expected to participate in practice on Wednesday. Moore, who is 26 years old, was selected in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the 49ers from Western Michigan.
Williams is an 11-time Pro Bowl pick (2012-18, 2020-23) and has been named first-team All-Pro three times (2021-23). He was chosen as the fourth overall pick in the 2010 draft by Washington, coming out of Oklahoma.
Shanahan also announced on Wednesday that rookie running back Isaac Guerendo, who suffered a hamstring injury in last Sunday's defeat against the Los Angeles Rams, will not be participating in practice.
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who returned to the field last week after an Achilles injury in last season's Super Bowl, will have limited participation in practice, according to Shanahan. Greenlaw left the game against the Rams in the third quarter due to discomfort in his Achilles and knee. All-Pro defensive end Nick Bosa (hip/oblique) will also have limited participation.
