NFL Announces Record Decrease in Concussions in 2024

The NFL declared on Thursday that they had released data on injuries for the 2024 season, stating that concussions had reached a "historic low" as helmet safety continued to improve.

Compared to the 2023 season, concussions had decreased by 17 percent and were 12 percent lower than the three-year average from 2021-23.

Jeff Miller, the NFL executive vice president in charge of player health and safety, emphasized that this was an important milestone but not the end of their efforts. He stated in a news release, "Through advancements in equipment, changes in rules, and a continued shift in culture, we will make the game safer and more thrilling."

The NFL highlighted the significant improvement in helmet safety as a major contributing factor. In addition to advancements in helmet technology, the 2024 season also saw the introduction of soft-shelled Guardian Caps, which players were able to wear during games for the first time after previously only being allowed in practice.

The league also praised the new "dynamic kickoff" rule, which was implemented in 2024. According to the NFL, this new format resulted in a 57 percent increase in kickoff returns and a decrease in players' average speeds, leading to a 43 percent decrease in concussions compared to the 2021-23 average. It also saw the lowest number of lower extremity strains on kickoffs since at least 2018.

Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL's chief medical officer, stated, "This season's injury data demonstrates real progress in our efforts to reduce concussions and lower-extremity strains, which have been key areas of focus in our injury reduction strategy. We are pleased to see the continued success in these areas and will use this data to further strengthen our approach to injury prevention and reduction during the offseason."
