The Washington Commanders have placed quarterback Marcus Mariota on injured reserve on Saturday due to a chest injury. This means that he will not be able to play for at least the first four games of the season.

It was already announced by the Commanders that Mariota would not be able to play in their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, as he did not participate in practice for the second day in a row on Friday.

In his place, Jeff Driskel will serve as the backup to rookie Jayden Daniels in the game against the Buccaneers.

On the same day, the Commanders have also signed former Notre Dame and Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman from their practice squad.

Mariota, who is 30 years old, was signed by Washington on a one-year, $6 million contract during the offseason.

He was selected by the Tennessee Titans as the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. During his time with the Titans from 2015-19, he had a record of 29-32 as a starter. He also started for the Atlanta Falcons in 2022, where he went 5-8.

Last season, Mariota played as the backup to Jalen Hurts for the Philadelphia Eagles. In three games, he completed 15 of 23 passes for 164 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

Mariota, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2014 while playing for Oregon, has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 15,820 yards, 93 touchdowns, and 55 interceptions in 90 games (74 starts) for the Titans, Las Vegas Raiders (2020-21), Falcons, and Eagles.

In addition, the Commanders have also promoted linebacker Nick Bellore and defensive tackle Sheldon Day from the practice squad to play in Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.
