Assuming there are no setbacks, star rusher Christian McCaffrey is set to make his season debut for the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan discussed McCaffrey's progress in practice during an interview with KNBR radio in San Francisco on Thursday afternoon.

"He's been exceptional these past two days," Shanahan stated. "You can never be certain about potential setbacks, but these two days have been fantastic and I anticipate seeing him out there."

McCaffrey was not active for Week 1 and was later placed on injured reserve on September 14th due to bilateral Achilles tendinitis. The reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year sought treatment in Germany and received a platelet-rich plasma injection.

On Monday, he participated in practice for the first time since September, starting his 21-day window to return from the midseason IR. He was listed as a limited participant on the 49ers' practice report on both Wednesday and Thursday.

Last season, McCaffrey led the NFL with 2,023 scrimmage yards: 1,459 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, along with 67 receptions for 564 yards and seven touchdowns. He also had 59 carries for 268 yards and four touchdowns, as well as a team-leading 19 receptions for 152 yards in the playoffs.

McCaffrey's last game was on February 11th, when the 49ers lost to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. In that game, he had 22 carries for 80 yards and eight receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown.
