The San Francisco 49ers will have Joshua Dobbs starting in place of the injured quarterback Brock Purdy as they close out their season against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

On Wednesday, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Dobbs will be taking over for Purdy, who suffered a right elbow contusion with nerve inflammation during Monday night's loss to the Detroit Lions.

Shanahan confirmed that both Dobbs and fellow quarterback Brandon Allen are prepared to play.

"They have been great assets to have on the team," Shanahan said. "We have considered both of them as our top two quarterbacks throughout the year, and they have both provided excellent looks on the scout team. They have split all the reps and are always ready. They both prepare as if they are going to be the starter every week."

Due to the 49ers' thin offensive line, Dobbs' mobility gave him the advantage to start, according to Shanahan.

Dobbs, 29, made his debut for the 49ers on Monday night when he replaced Purdy. He completed 3 out of 4 passes for 35 yards and also rushed for a 7-yard touchdown in the 40-34 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Pittsburgh drafted Dobbs in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft from the University of Tennessee. He has thrown for 2,955 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 22 games (14 starts) for the Steelers (2018, 2020), Tennessee Titans (2022), Arizona Cardinals (2023), Minnesota Vikings (2023), and 49ers.

He has also rushed for 503 yards and seven touchdowns on 92 carries in his career. As a starter, he has a record of 3-11.

If Purdy is unable to play against the Cardinals (7-9), he will finish his third season in the NFL with a completion percentage of 65.9% (300 of 455) for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

On Wednesday, the 49ers listed 11 players as non-participants, including Purdy, defensive end Nick Bosa (knee), tight end George Kittle (ankle/hamstring), and receiver Deebo Samuel (ribs/wrist).
