"Jameis Winston Prepared for All Possibilities; Giants Open to Drafting QB at No. 3"
Despite signing both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston this spring, the New York Giants are still considering drafting another quarterback early.
However, general manager Joe Schoen has made it clear that he will not force the selection of a quarterback in the early rounds, setting a high standard for such a decision.
\"If we're talking about where we're picking, we want that player to be a franchise quarterback who can lead us to winning the NFC East every year,\" Schoen stated. \"Our ultimate goal is to win a Super Bowl, so they have to meet all of those requirements.\"
Schoen also mentioned that the Giants have the luxury of choosing the best player available at the third overall pick, regardless of position.
The Giants are picking behind the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns, both of which are in need of a quarterback. Cam Ward from Miami and Shedeur Sanders from Colorado are the two quarterback prospects expected to be high picks.
At the start of the offseason, Giants owner John Mara declared that finding a \"quarterback of the future\" was their top priority. Since then, they have signed 36-year-old Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson and 31-year-old former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston.
During his introductory press conference, Wilson stated that he expects to be the starting quarterback for the Giants. However, Schoen clarified on Monday that the team did not promise Wilson that they would not also draft a quarterback.
\"I didn't tell him what we're going to do at the third pick, but I did say that we are open to all possibilities,\" Schoen explained. \"You can't make a promise that you won't draft a certain position, that wouldn't be fair. We have the flexibility to go in any direction and play a game right now. We are not limited by our needs, giving us the option to go in multiple directions.\"
Winston, who signed with the Giants before Wilson, met with reporters on Monday and expressed his desire for a starting or \"bridge\" quarterback role. He also stated that he is willing to mentor a young quarterback if the Giants choose to draft one.
\"My role was explained to me as an opportunity to improve at the quarterback position,\" Winston said. \"I signed up for that because I am always looking to improve and be the best version of myself. I have played many different roles in my career, so I am ready for anything.\"
Winston also revealed that he has a good relationship with Wilson and has learned a lot from him, including how to run a successful business and take care of his body.
If the Giants do decide to draft a quarterback, whether it be at the third pick or in a later round, Winston is willing to take on the role of mentor.
\"I have had the opportunity to learn from great veteran quarterbacks like Ryan Fitzpatrick, Derek Carr, and Deshaun Watson. I have also mentored young quarterbacks like Dorian Thompson-Robinson during my time with the Cleveland Browns,\" Winston shared. \"I am more than willing to take on the responsibility of mentoring a young quarterback and I would cherish that opportunity.\"
