Extended November: Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Dak Prescott Expected to be Placed on Injured Reserve
Dallas Cowboys signal caller Dak Prescott is expected to be put on the injured reserve list due to a hamstring issue, sidelining him for the entirety of November.
The Cowboys (3-5) have ruled out Prescott for their Week 10 game against the Philadelphia Eagles (6-2), with backup Cooper Rush taking over as the starting quarterback for their NFC East showdown.
Team owner Jerry Jones stated on Tuesday that Prescott will most likely be placed on injured reserve, which means he will have to miss the next four games according to NFL rules. This is a challenging stretch for Dallas, as they will face the Eagles, the Houston Texans (6-3) in primetime, and play two games in just five days. Before their Thanksgiving matchup against the New York Giants (2-7), the Cowboys will also face former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn's Commanders (7-2) on November 24th.
Prescott could potentially return to the active roster for the December 9th game against the Cincinnati Bengals (4-5).
During the third quarter of their game against the Atlanta Falcons, Prescott appeared to be in pain after completing a 10-yard pass to Jalen Brooks. He remained in the game but was eventually ruled out with 11:08 left in the fourth quarter. Prescott revealed that he first felt the discomfort on the play before, when he was getting up after a 5-yard scramble.
Rush, who took over for Prescott on Sunday, will have Trey Lance as his backup when the Cowboys face the Eagles.
Head coach Mike McCarthy praised Rush, stating that he is the most respected backup quarterback he has coached since Rich Gannon.
\"(He) has that level of credibility. He's a fantastic teammate and a leader for the younger players,\" McCarthy said. \"He's incredibly intelligent and instinctive. He does an excellent job on the scout team and always does things the right way. He's a true professional and we have complete confidence in him.\"
In his 36th consecutive start, Prescott completed 18 of 24 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown, in addition to a season-high 30 rushing yards. The 31-year-old had only rushed for 24 yards so far this season.
Rush led the Cowboys' comeback attempt, throwing for 115 yards and a touchdown. While he has not seen much playing time behind Prescott, Rush went 4-1 as the starter when Prescott broke his right thumb in the 2022 season opener.
Prescott also missed 11 games in 2020 due to a right ankle injury and sat out one game the following season with a strained right calf.
