"Dolphins release LB Shaq Barrett from reserve/retired status"
The Miami Dolphins are releasing Shaquil Barrett, a two-time Pro Bowl pass-rusher, from the reserve/retired list on Thursday, according to his agent who confirmed to ESPN.
Barrett, who is 32 years old, could potentially play this season if he clears waivers and signs with another team. However, if another team claims him, he would not be able to play for the remainder of the season.
\"We are grateful to the Dolphins for giving Shaq the opportunity to continue his career in the NFL,\" said Drew Rosenhaus, Barrett's agent. \"We hope that he will pass through waivers and become a free agent so he can play again this season. He is in excellent shape and would be ready to play immediately.\"
In July, Barrett announced his retirement, just four months after signing a one-year, $9 million contract with the Dolphins.
However, he had a change of heart and applied for reinstatement on November 26th. Unfortunately, Miami did not approve this request.
Barrett was not drafted out of Colorado State in 2014 and has played in a total of 131 games (85 starts) over nine seasons with the Denver Broncos (2014-2018) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2019-2023). He has won Super Bowls with both teams and has recorded 400 tackles (73 for loss), 59 sacks, 22 forced fumbles, and three interceptions.
His most successful season was in 2019 with the Buccaneers, where he led the NFL with 19.5 sacks and was selected for his first Pro Bowl. He also earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2021 after recording 10 sacks.
