Defensive end Isaiah Buggs is challenging his conviction for misdemeanor animal abuse charges, according to a report from AL.com on Friday.

Buggs, a former standout at the University of Alabama who was let go by the Kansas City Chiefs on June 24, was found guilty on July 19. Judge Joanne Jannik of the Tuscaloosa County District Court sentenced him to 365 days of hard labor and mandated that he serve 60 days.

The rest of the sentence was suspended for two years, with the defendant's conduct taken into consideration, as stated in the report. He was also prohibited from owning any firearms and Jannik specified that he could not have any dogs or cats.

In Alabama, hard labor is defined as work on public property, such as roads and bridges.

Buggs, who is 27 years old, signed a one-year contract worth $1.29 million with $350,000 in guaranteed money in February with the Chiefs. The team released him after his third arrest of the offseason, this one for domestic violence and burglary charges in Tuscaloosa County in June.

In May, he was charged with animal cruelty in Tuscaloosa after two dogs in his care, a pitbull and a Rottweiler mix, were found to be neglected and severely malnourished, according to AL.com. One of the dogs had to be put down.

In April, he was arrested for misdemeanors at a hookah lounge he used to own after allegedly pushing the Tuscaloosa police chief.

Buggs was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons with the Steelers and the last two with the Detroit Lions, who released him in January.

He has played in 56 games, starting 23 of them, and recorded 89 tackles, 12 quarterback hits, and two sacks. He also returned one fumble for 33 yards.
