Current backup quarterback Daniel Jones took on the role of a scout team safety during Thursday's practice, indicating that his time with the New York Giants is coming to an end.

Jones delivered a prepared statement, expressing his desire to share his thoughts and feelings after losing the starting position to undrafted free agent Tommy DeVito.

In his first public comments since head coach Brian Daboll's decision on Monday, Jones spoke in the past tense about his time with the Giants (2-8), suggesting that a professional separation is on the horizon.

\"Playing for the New York Giants has been a dream come true and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be here,\" Jones stated on Thursday. \"The Giants are a first-class organization and I have nothing but genuine respect and appreciation for the individuals who have built it and continue to uphold its tradition. I have formed meaningful relationships with my teammates, coaches, and staff during my six years here. While there have been some great moments, we all wish there were more of them.\"

Currently ranked 32nd among all qualified quarterbacks in passer rating this season, Jones has thrown for eight touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2024. He also has an injury guarantee worth $23 million for this season, which the Giants likely do not want to risk paying if they plan to part ways with him in the offseason.

Jones, who is 27 years old, was a first-round draft pick in 2019 and signed a four-year, $160 million contract in 2023. He suffered a season-ending ACL tear last year but returned in time to start this season as the No. 1 quarterback. However, he was benched after a record of 3-13 in his last 16 starts.

If Jones is released before March 2025, the remaining portion of his contract can be partially removed from the team's books.

\"I take full responsibility for my role in our lack of wins. No one wanted to win more than I did and I gave my all on the field and in my preparation,\" Jones acknowledged. \"This season has been disappointing for all of us, and I wish I could have done more. I am 100 percent accountable for my performance. I did not play well enough on a consistent basis to help the team achieve the desired results. The NFL is a tough league and winning requires consistent effort from everyone involved. We did not do that well enough, so changes were made, and I understand that.\"

\"I love the game, I love being part of a team, and I am excited for my next opportunity. I know that there is a lot of good football ahead of me, and I am looking forward to it,\" Jones added. \"To all the fans, I have deep respect and appreciation for your passion and love for the Giants. You are a huge part of what makes playing for this team so special.\"

When asked about his statement being written in the past tense, Jones stated that he is still processing the situation.

\"I am still processing everything, and for now, I am doing my best to help Tommy DeVito and the team prepare. That is my focus right now,\" Jones said.

\"Obviously, a decision was made, and I am not playing. That is how it is being framed,\" he concluded.
