Announcement: Lions Appoint John Morton as Offensive Coordinator

The Detroit Lions have selected John Morton, former pass game coordinator for the Denver Broncos, to be their new offensive coordinator, according to multiple media reports on Tuesday.

Morton, who is 55 years old, will fill the position left vacant by Ben Johnson, who recently became the head coach for the Chicago Bears.

During Johnson's time as offensive coordinator, the Lions had the top scoring offense in the NFL, averaging 33.2 points per game, and ranked second in total offense with 409.5 yards per game. The team also set franchise records for points (564) and regular-season wins (15) this past season.

Meanwhile, Morton's former team, the Broncos, ranked 20th in the league for pass offense (212.4 yards per game) and averaged 25.0 points per game.

Morton previously worked with the Lions as a senior offensive assistant in 2022 before joining the Broncos in 2023. He has a history with Lions quarterback Jared Goff, having worked with him during Johnson's first season as offensive coordinator.

Morton also has experience as an offensive coordinator with the New York Jets in 2017 and has held various roles with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and New Orleans Saints.
