The San Francisco 49ers, who will face the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night, have signed kicker Matthew Wright to a one-year deal on Tuesday.

Their starting kicker, Jake Moody, suffered a high ankle sprain in the second quarter of their 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday and will not be able to play. Moody was attempting to tackle Cardinals returner DeeJay Dallas on a kickoff when he was knocked backwards, causing his body to fold over his right (kicking) leg.

Wright, who is 28 years old, has played in 24 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers (2020, 2022), Jacksonville Jaguars (2021), Kansas City Chiefs (2022) and Carolina Panthers (2023). He has successfully made 40 out of 47 field-goal attempts, with his longest kick being 59 yards. He has also made 35 out of 37 extra-point attempts and has recorded 23 touchbacks in 83 kickoffs.

He was previously on the 49ers' practice squad from September 4-9, 2023, and was later released by the Steelers at the end of the 2024 preseason.

According to ESPN, the 49ers also held tryouts for kickers Randy Bullock, Riley Patterson, Anders Carlson, and Matt Coghlin.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that safety Talanoa Hufanga is expected to be out for about a month due to torn wrist ligaments. Hufanga, who is 25 years old, has played in two games this season, both of which he started, and has recorded eight tackles.
