San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey took part in practice on Monday for the first time since September, signaling the start of a 21-day period in which the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year could be added to the active roster.

According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers had planned for McCaffrey to practice during their bye week and potentially return for their Week 10 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The team officially opened the practice window for both McCaffrey and offensive lineman Jon Feliciano, who has been on injured reserve since the beginning of the season due to a knee injury.

McCaffrey had been sidelined at the start of training camp and was limited in practices leading up to the first regular season game against the New York Jets due to Achilles soreness. He was unexpectedly inactive for that game, with Jordan Mason filling in as his primary replacement.

In a previous discussion about players returning from injuries, Shanahan praised McCaffrey's dedication and work ethic, stating that he likely won't need much practice time to be ready for game action.

\"He's completely focused on it,\" Shanahan joked, adding that McCaffrey would probably be thinking about running routes even while walking down the aisle at his own wedding.

\"He understands what it takes to play at this level, especially at the level he does. And not many people can play at that level unless they have that kind of dedication.\"

Last season, McCaffrey led the NFL with 2,023 yards from scrimmage, including 1,459 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, 67 catches for 564 yards and seven touchdowns, and 59 carries for 268 yards and four touchdowns in the playoffs.

His last game was on February 11, when the 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. McCaffrey recorded 22 carries for 80 yards and eight receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown.
