"SMU Secures Commitment from Matt Leinart's Quarterback Son"
Cole Leinart, the offspring of former University of Southern California standout quarterback and recipient of the Heisman Trophy, Matt Leinart, declared on social media Wednesday that he has pledged his commitment to Southern Methodist University.
Currently a quarterback at Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, California, Cole Leinart is a three-star prospect ranked as the 81st best quarterback in the Class of 2026 and the 158th best player in California, according to 247Sports.
In an interview with ESPN, Leinart stated, "I am drawn to the atmosphere they are cultivating at SMU - I simply want to be a part of it. I have a deep appreciation for the coaching staff. They have become like family to me. I am eager to be a part of what they have built there."
The recruiting service had Leinart, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound junior, selecting SMU over offers from Colorado, Pittsburgh, Georgia State, and UNLV. He previously attended Mater Dei High School and Newport Harbor before transferring to Redondo Union this autumn.
His father played for USC from 2003-2005, winning the Heisman in 2004 and national championships in 2003 and 2004. Leinart also played in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals (2006-2009), Houston Texans (2011), and Oakland Raiders (2012). He was selected 10th overall in the 2006 draft by the Cardinals.
SMU (8-1) is ranked 13th in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, which were revealed on Tuesday. The Mustangs are also ranked 13th in the latest Associated Press poll.
