Florida QB DJ Lagway's Injury Deemed 'Less Serious'
The harm suffered by Florida's quarterback DJ Lagway is "less significant" than initially believed and the first-year player has an opportunity to participate in this week's game, according to Gators' head coach Billy Napier on Monday.
Lagway left Saturday's defeat against Georgia with a hamstring injury and was taken off the field on a cart. At the time, Napier described it as a major injury.
"The positive news is that we have encouraging updates on that front," Napier told reporters on Monday. "We do believe that the injury is not as severe, and there is a possibility for recovery and a return."
The Gators (4-4, 2-3 SEC) will face No. 5 Texas (7-1, 3-1) on Saturday.
Lagway sustained the injury in the second quarter and remained on the ground while receiving medical attention. He threw for 47 yards and one touchdown before exiting.
"He has a hamstring injury. A pretty significant one," Napier stated at the time.
He was replaced by Aidan Warner, who completed 7 of 22 passes for 66 yards and an interception. The Gators were leading Georgia 13-6 at halftime before the Bulldogs ultimately won 34-20.
Lagway has thrown for 1,071 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions since taking over for starting quarterback Graham Mertz, who tore his ACL on October 12th against Tennessee.
