"First 12-Team Era CFP Ranking: Oregon and Ohio State Top the List"
Oregon made its debut at the top spot in the College Football Playoff committee's first in-season rankings for 2024 on Tuesday, with fellow Big Ten team Ohio State following closely behind at No. 2.
This is the first time the CFP rankings have been revealed in the 12-team era, which is a significant change from the previous four-team format and has major implications for the playoff.
Despite only losing by one point to Oregon, Ohio State is ranked No. 2 but would be seeded fifth due to the top four seeds being reserved for the highest-ranked conference champions.
The top five conference champions receive automatic bids, with No. 12 Boise State from the Mountain West Conference earning the last spot and facing Ohio State in a quarterfinal game in Columbus in the current projection.
The CFP's top 12 teams closely mirrored this week's AP Top 25 poll, with the only difference being the positioning of Georgia and Ohio State. The AP voters had Georgia at No. 2, but the CFP ranked them at No. 3.
Miami was ranked No. 4 and would receive the final first-round bye, with Texas at No. 5 and Penn State, Tennessee, Indiana, BYU, and Notre Dame rounding out the top 10.
Ohio State's loss was BYU's gain, as the Cougars were projected as the Big 12 champion and No. 4 seed, five spots higher than their ranking.
Two-loss Alabama was ranked No. 11 and would face SEC rival Texas in a quarterfinal playoff game. The first two teams left out of the field were both from Texas: No. 13 SMU and No. 14 Texas A&M.
Projected first-round byes for the CFP: No. 1 seed Oregon, No. 2 seed Georgia, No. 3 seed Miami, No. 4 seed BYU
