Former standout player for Washington State, John Mateer, who is known as one of the best quarterbacks in the country, announced on social media Wednesday evening that he will be transferring to Oklahoma.

Mateer, who was highly sought after when he entered the transfer portal on Monday, is following former Cougars offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, who was recently hired by Oklahoma, as well as quarterbacks coach John Kuceyeski, who is expected to join him.

The Sooners, who lost their starting quarterback Jackson Arnold to Auburn through the transfer portal, were considered the top choice for Mateer. Miami, where former Washington State quarterback Cam Ward had a successful season and became a Heisman Trophy finalist before entering the NFL Draft, was also a potential landing spot.

Mateer, who spent two years behind Ward at Washington State, is a redshirt sophomore with two more seasons of eligibility. In his first season as a starter in 2024, he led the FBS in total touchdowns (44), throwing for 3,139 yards with 29 touchdowns and only seven interceptions, and rushing for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns in 12 games.

On Wednesday, Washington State's head coach Jake Dickert left his position to become the head coach at Wake Forest.
