Former Louisiana State University (LSU) strong safety Greg Brooks alleges that the university and a nearby medical center were negligent in their diagnosis and treatment of his brain tumor, resulting in permanent disability.

The lawsuit, obtained by Yahoo and local newspaper The Advocate, was filed in August in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Brooks claims that his medical issues began before the 2023 season, during which he played in two games before the brain tumor was discovered in an MRI.

According to Brooks, he experienced vomiting and loss of consciousness during practice on August 5, 2023, in front of coaches and trainers.

The lawsuit states that Brooks informed his coaches and trainers of his dizziness, headache, and nausea, all of which are neurological symptoms. He was given Zofran, a drug to prevent nausea and vomiting, and sent back to practice. Despite continuing to experience dizziness in the following weeks, coaches allegedly encouraged him to continue playing to avoid losing his starting position.

Brooks claims that he was not referred to a neurologist until mid-September, delaying his diagnosis and causing him unnecessary pain and suffering.

The lawsuit names LSU head coach Brian Kelly, then-defensive coordinator Matt House, then-safeties coach Kerry Cooks, head athletic trainer Owen Stanley, and team doctors Stephen Etheredge and Vincent Shaw as defendants.

In a statement to Yahoo, LSU expressed their concern for Brooks and praised the medical care provided by their partner, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

Brooks also alleges that surgeon Brandon Gaynor committed malpractice, resulting in catastrophic neurological injuries that have left him unable to walk one year after surgery.

In response, the hospital stated that their top priority is providing excellent healthcare and that their neurosurgical team is highly experienced.

Brooks, a fifth-year senior, played his final game on September 9, 2023, and made four tackles in a 72-10 win over Grambling.
