Devin Brown, reserve quarterback for Ohio State, to transfer to Cal

After achieving his objective of securing a national championship with Ohio State on Monday evening, reserve quarterback Devin Brown is moving to Cal.

Brown had joined the NCAA transfer portal on December 9th but declared that he would fulfill his commitment to the Buckeyes for their College Football Playoff run, which culminated in a 34-23 triumph over Notre Dame in the championship game.

He retweeted a post from the Cal football account, welcoming him to the team.

Brown is in search of a starting position after serving as a backup to Kyle McCord in 2023 and Will Howard this season. Brown, who still has two years of eligibility remaining, appeared in a total of 15 games at Ohio State and had a combined 27-of-48 passing record for 331 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. He also rushed 30 times for 37 yards and one touchdown.

A four-star quarterback in the Class of 2022, Brown was ranked as the nation's 43rd overall prospect and 6th quarterback according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Brown is heading to Cal, where 2024 starter Fernando Mendoza has transferred to Indiana.

Ohio State is losing Howard, a graduate transfer from Kansas State, as well as Brown and freshman backup Air Noland, who have both transferred to South Carolina. Julian Sayin, a transfer from Alabama, will be entering his redshirt freshman season, while Lincoln Kienholz will be in his third year with the program if he stays. The Buckeyes have also signed five-star recruit Tavien St. Clair.
