'Dabo Swinney recounts Election Day voting error'
Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney joked Tuesday that the state was prepared to vote him out of office following a misunderstanding on Election Day.
Election officials in South Carolina rejected Swinney's attempt to cast a ballot Tuesday morning, informing him that the system indicated he had already voted.
Swinney clarified to reporters that the system confused Dabo - whose legal first name is William - with his son who shares the same name and had voted early.
"They have voted me out of the state," Swinney joked. "We have a record of 6-2 and 5-1, man. They have sent me away."
Swinney stated that he completed a paper ballot and will attend a hearing on Friday to resolve the issue.
"My oldest son, Will, voted last week, and somehow they made a mistake, didn't verify his birthday or something, and they counted my vote," Swinney explained. "So, what should have taken 10 minutes, took an hour. Next thing I know, I am on the phone with a director, I believe her name was Amy, a very kind lady, and she is trying to explain the whole process to me."
"It was quite an experience this morning, but apparently they will fix it on Friday, and my son and I will have our votes counted on Friday. I do not know if it will make a difference on Friday, but yeah. I was trying to do my best and be a responsible citizen by voting. Sometimes, doing your best is not enough. We will continue to figure it out."
No. 19 Clemson (6-2, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) had their six-game winning streak snapped last Saturday in a 33-21 loss to Louisville at home. The Tigers will return to action on Saturday against Virginia Tech (5-4, 3-2).
