Colorado's performance decreases by 49% in Second Year with Deion Sanders as Coach

The Colorado Buffaloes have achieved bowl eligibility for the first time since 2016 and are currently ranked No. 21 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. However, they are not generating the same high television ratings as they did during coach Deion Sanders' first season in Boulder.

So far this season, Colorado games have averaged 3.7 million viewers across Fox, NBC, CBS, and ESPN. This is a decrease of approximately 49 percent compared to the same point last season, according to the Sports Business Journal. In 2023, the Buffs averaged 7.3 million viewers through their first seven games.

Despite the decline in ratings, Sanders' program is still receiving national attention. This year's ratings are up 424 percent from the same point in the 2022 season when the Buffs only averaged 706,000 viewers during their one-win season.

Out of the top 15 most-watched college football games this season, Colorado's loss to Nebraska is the only game featuring the Buffs. Last year, they had three games in the top 15.

With a record of 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12, Colorado has a chance to compete in the conference title game in their first season back in the conference. A win in the Big 12 title game would also secure a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff.

In their most recent game on Oct. 26, Shedeur Sanders completed 25 of 30 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns, and also scored a rushing touchdown as Colorado defeated Cincinnati 34-23.

The Buffs have four regular-season games left. They will face Texas Tech on the road this Saturday, followed by a home game against Utah on Nov. 16. They will then travel to Kansas before returning home to host Oklahoma State.

Currently, No. 9 BYU (8-0) is leading the Big 12 with a 5-0 record, followed by Colorado and Iowa State at 4-1.
