"Announcement: SMU Second-String Quarterback Preston Stone Transferring to Northwestern"
Northwestern has reportedly acquired SMU's backup quarterback Preston Stone.
This created an interesting situation during the fourth quarter of SMU's 38-10 defeat against Penn State in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
Coach Rhett Lashlee decided to replace starter Kevin Jennings and gave Stone the option to finish the game. Stone declined.
\"I understand,\" Lashlee stated during the postgame press conference. \"At that point, we didn't want Kevin to risk injury and hinder his offseason. Preston has the opportunity to play elsewhere and it wouldn't be fair to put him in for a drive or two that wouldn't impact the game and potentially get hurt. We had a great conversation with him and decided to let Keldric Luster take over.\"
Stone had a successful 2023 season with 3,197 yards, 28 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. He started this season but eventually lost the starting position to Jennings in September.
This season, Stone completed 30 out of 51 passes for 421 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception.
