"Analysis: Ray Lewis Considered as Possible Candidate for FAU Head Coach Position"
Legendary linebacker Ray Lewis is a potential contender for the head coaching position at Florida Atlantic, as reported by ESPN.
According to CBS Sports, there has been no official communication or interview as of Wednesday morning.
After just two years as head coach, Tom Herman was fired on Monday following a disappointing 6-16 record at the Boca Raton school.
Lewis, now 49 years old, achieved great success during his 17-year career with the Baltimore Ravens, who drafted him in the first round of the 1996 NFL Draft. He boasts an impressive resume, with two Super Bowl wins, 13 Pro Bowl selections, and seven First-team All-Pro honors. In 2018, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Among his many NFL records, Lewis holds the record for most tackles and most solo tackles in league history. He is also the only player to have at least 40 career sacks and 30 career interceptions.
However, Lewis has no prior coaching experience at the professional or collegiate level.
ESPN suggests that hiring Ray Lewis could follow the successful path of Deion Sanders, another Hall of Fame defender who was hired as a collegiate coach without any previous coaching experience. In his two seasons as head coach at Colorado, Sanders has turned the team around from a 1-11 record to currently competing for a spot in the Big 12 title game with an 8-2 record (6-1 Big 12). He previously coached at Jackson State.
Since retiring from the NFL, Lewis has held various media positions, including several years at ESPN.
Lewis grew up in Lakeland, Florida and played two seasons of college football at the University of Miami.
