'Wings secure top selection in WNBA draft lottery'
The Dallas Wings have secured the top spot in the 2025 WNBA Draft after winning the draft lottery for the first time in franchise history.
Sunday's lottery granted Dallas the first overall pick, with a 227 out of 1,000 chance of being selected.
The Los Angeles Sparks, who were favored to receive the No. 1 pick, will draft second for the second consecutive year. The Chicago Sky will select third, while the Washington Mystics will have the fourth pick.
The four teams that did not make the 2024 postseason were assigned number combinations based on their combined records from the 2023 and 2024 seasons. The Sparks (25-55) had the most assigned combinations (442 out of 1,000), while the Sky and Wings were tied with identical records of 31-49 since 2023.
The Wings are currently searching for a new head coach after parting ways with Latricia Trammell following a disappointing 9-31 season. The team recently hired former Sparks and Connecticut Sun head coach Curt Miller as their new general manager, and he will lead the search for a new coach.
UConn star guard Paige Bueckers is the top prospect on WNBA draft boards as the college season begins. Other potential options for the Wings include Southern California forward Kiki Iriafen and Notre Dame guard Olivia Miles.
In 2024, the Wings selected fifth and ninth overall, choosing Ohio State guard Jacy Sheldon and French guard Carla Leite. The Sparks drafted Stanford forward Cameron Brink with the second overall pick last April, while the Sky selected South Carolina center Kamilla Cardoso at No. 3 and added LSU's Angel Reese at No. 7.
The expansion team Golden State Valkyries will have the fifth pick in each of the draft's three rounds. The Valkyries will also participate in an expansion draft on December 6th.
