UCLA recruits New Mexico point guard Donovan Dent from transfer portal

Donovan Dent, the Mountain West Conference's Player of the Year and leader of New Mexico's NCAA Tournament run, is transferring to UCLA.

Multiple news sources reported the move on Friday evening.

According to ESPN, Dent was ranked as the top player in the transfer portal, while 247 Sports had him listed as the second best. Previous reports had indicated he was headed to Kentucky, but he ultimately chose UCLA, which is close to his hometown of Corona, California.

This past season, Dent averaged 20.4 points, 6.4 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per game, helping the Lobos achieve a 27-8 record. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the tenth-seeded New Mexico team defeated No. 7 Marquette 75-66, with Dent contributing 21 points and six assists. He also had a strong performance in the second round, scoring 14 points and dishing out six assists in the Lobos' 71-63 loss to second-seeded Michigan State.

Over the course of three seasons, the 6-foot-2 Dent played in 104 games and started 72, averaging 13.5 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.3 rebounds.

At UCLA, Dent is expected to immediately take over as the starting point guard. The current Bruins' point guard, Dylan Andrews, recently announced that he will be entering the transfer portal.
