Stephen F. Austin dismisses coach Kyle Keller following 8-11 beginning
Stephen F. Austin University terminated the employment of men's basketball coach Kyle Keller following a disappointing 8-11 start to the season.
The Lumberjacks have struggled in Southland Conference play with a record of 1-7 and are coming off a demoralizing 79-59 loss to McNeese on Monday.
Keller, aged 57, had been with the school in Nacogdoches, Texas for nine years and leaves with a record of 171-95.
He led SFA to the NCAA Tournament in the 2017-18 season and was named the Southland's Coach of the Year in 2019-20.
\"We would like to express our gratitude to Kyle for his positive contributions and leadership during his nine-year tenure, which included remarkable victories at some of the most renowned college basketball arenas that will forever be remembered in SFA's history,\" stated athletic director Michael McBroom in a press release on Wednesday. \"We wish him the best in his future endeavors.\"
Keller's total number of wins ranks second in the school's Division I history, only behind Danny Kaspar who recorded 246 wins from 2000-2013.
Associate head coach Tony Jasick will serve as the interim coach for the remainder of the season. The Lumberjacks will face Northwestern State at home on Saturday.
