Monmouth's Coach Rice Receives 1-Game Suspension for Referee Criticism
Monmouth men's basketball coach King Rice will receive a one-game suspension from the Coastal Athletic Association on Thursday for making derogatory remarks about a referee during the previous season.
The CAA has decided to suspend Rice for the Hawks' first game of the CAA season against Stony Brook in West Long Branch, New Jersey.
Rice, aged 56, violated the conference's code of conduct with his comments following Monmouth's 83-59 loss to Charleston at the CAA tournament on March 10, 2024 in Washington, D.C.
Assistant coach Clive Bentick will take over as head coach for the Hawks (2-11) when they face the Seawolves (4-9) at home.
Rice, a former point guard at North Carolina from 1987-91, has been the head coach at Monmouth since 2011 and has a total record of 209-219.
