The head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, Taylor Jenkins, announced on Wednesday that point guard Ja Morant has a slight sprain in his left ankle.

Jenkins stated that an MRI scan revealed the severity of the injury.

He also mentioned that the team will proceed with caution when it comes to Morant's recovery, but they are optimistic that he will be able to play in the season opener against the Utah Jazz on October 23.

Morant, who is 25 years old, sustained the injury during the team's preseason win against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday. Despite the injury, he managed to score 13 points, grab four rebounds, and dish out three assists in just 18 minutes of play.

Last season, Morant was only able to play in nine games due to a suspension and a shoulder injury. He was suspended for the first 25 games for "conduct detrimental to the league" and later suffered a season-ending injury to his right shoulder.

Throughout his five-year career in the NBA, Morant, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, has averaged 22.5 points, 7.4 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game.

The Grizzlies may also be without their star forward Jaren Jackson Jr., who is dealing with a hamstring injury. He sustained the injury during the team's first practice of the season on October 1.
