Golden State to Honor Andre Iguodala by Retiring His No. 9 Jersey Next Month

Andre Iguodala's No. 9 jersey to be retired by Warriors in upcoming month

The jersey number 9 of Andre Iguodala will be retired by the Golden State Warriors on February 23rd, when they face the Dallas Mavericks in San Francisco.

The team announced this news on Tuesday, which also happens to be Iguodala's 41st birthday.

Iguodala will join the ranks of Wilt Chamberlain, Chris Mullin, Nate Thurmond, Alvin Attles, Rick Barry, and Tom Meschery as the seventh player in Warriors history to have his number raised to the rafters.

The 6-foot-6 small forward won four NBA championships with the Warriors in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. He was also named the Finals MVP in the first championship series of the team's dynasty, alongside his teammates Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.

\"I wouldn't be in this position without those guys,\" said Iguodala, who retired in October 2023. \"They understand my importance, but Steph, Klay, and Draymond are all unique individuals, making our team a powerful force. It would be almost impossible to replicate that success.\"

During the 2015 NBA Finals, Iguodala played a crucial role in helping the Warriors overcome a 2-1 deficit against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He averaged 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.3 steals in the series.

\"Andre will be remembered as one of the most intelligent, cunning, and successful players to ever wear a Warriors jersey,\" said Joe Lacob, Warriors co-executive chairman and CEO, in a statement. \"We believed this when we acquired him in 2013, but the reality - four championships, six Finals appearances, a Finals MVP - surpassed our wildest dreams.

\"He was the perfect player and person for our team at the perfect time, and his sacrifice in coming off the bench in 2014 showed that he was here to help us achieve one goal: winning. The evidence is in the rafters, and his number deserves to be alongside the banners he helped us raise.\"

In his career, Iguodala averaged 11.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 1,231 games (784 starts) with the Philadelphia 76ers, Denver Nuggets, Miami Heat, and Warriors. He was an All-Star with Philadelphia in 2011-12 and was selected to two NBA All-Defensive teams.
